Born Under Libra
|
 |
“...‘The Rat Patrol’
as conceived
by Samuel Beckett.”
|
In
a plot familiar to both the cinema and daily life in Iran, young
people struggle to reconcile progressive attitudes with strict religious
traditions of an older generation. Daniel is in love with fellow
university student Mahtab, but her father is campaigning for segregated
classes at the university. Daniel’s association with an ultra-religious
group and Mahtab’s sympathies with the reformists push the
couple further apart. After his love letter to Mahtab is made public,
the couple flees Tehran for the countryside, but their attempt to
return to the city is a nightmare through a dangerous wasteland.
BORN UNDER LIBRA, starring one of Iran’s most popular actors,
Mohammad Reza Farutan (Two Women) is a romantic drama of youthful
unrest and an allegory for Iran’s ongoing political turmoil.

Going By
|
 |
"Pleasantly
watchable..."
|
On
any given day a variety of travelers take the road from Tehran to
northern Iran. On one particular day, four carloads of people take
the main road, each for different reasons. The characters do not
know each other, and their final destinations
differ, but their conversations about life and death have much in
common. While staying within the conventions of the road movie,
director Iraj Karimi successfully adds a metaphorical dimension
to the daylong journey of the characters. By turns pleasant and
profound, Going By is a remarkable debut feature for Karimi, one
of Iran’s most prominent film critics. |

"A sweet

Actor director Hamid Jebelli (Son of Maryam), offers a charming
portrait of a mentally challenged man looking for love in a world
that largely ignores him. Feeble-minded Reza works at a bridal shop
where he transports wedding dresses on his old, rickety bicycle
between a shy seamstress and shop customers. Reza spends his time
communing with his long-dead mother at the cemetery, or with a dress
mannequin in the shop window. One day, not long after the mannequin
loses its head, Reza's life changes when a beautiful woman, accompanied
by her maid, arrives at the store looking for bridal veils.

a wedding photographer who plans to rob his next ceremony with the
help of his siblings. Unbeknownst to Siamak, his own father-in-law-to-be
has enlisted a hood named Bad Nasser to tail him, and of course
Nasser wants in on the loot. |

Jonathan Curiel, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Ahmad needs Sima to pretend that Saba is his cousin. Sima and the
couple's young daughter accompany Ahmad and Saba on their trip--a
humiliating situation for the devoted wife and mother. But, a surprising
turn awaits the trio when they stop in a town where a man has just
murdered his wife for her alleged affair.

Fifth Reaction
|
 |
"Impassioned
and suspenseful.."
Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times
|
| From
the controversial director of Hidden Half and Two Women comes another
tale of the clash between modernism and tradition in contemporary
Iran. A progressive, recently widowed teacher and her conservative,
controlling father-in-law fight for custody of her two small children.
According to tradition, Fereshteh should remain in her father-in-law's
home with her children, but she refuses. Afraid of losing custody
of the boys, she decides to disappear with help from her women friends.
Tahmineh Milani's film captures the tumult of a nation plagued by
the conflicting philosophies of hard-line religious groups and an
educated, cosmopolitan population. |
